Is E3 ever going to recover its previous glory?
Although the world is heading in the right direction when it comes to battling Covid, this year the in-person E3 has always felt like wishful thinking. Today, the LA City papers seem to indicate that the physical event has been postponed.
Resetera user Rösti found a special meeting timetable for the Los Angeles Convention and Tourism Growth Board on the city’s official website. It lists E3 2021 as a “Canceled Live Action 2021.”
The paper also states that the board is collaborating with the ESA production staff on broadcasting opportunities at the LA Convention Center, as well as on the licence for events of 2022 and 2023.
The news is not that shocking. Earlier this month, we received rumours that E3 was an online-only gathering. ESA said it was “transforming the E3 experience for 2021,” but not all gaming publishers appear to be on board with the concept of an online model.
The same month that E3 takes place, another massive meeting, the Mobile World Congress, will return as an in-person gathering. Approximately 50,000 people are expected to attend MWC Barcelona, half of the usual 100,000 visitors, and many Covid security measures will be placed in place. But there are concerns that an increase in cases such as CES 2020 could have contributed to an outbreak rise in Las Vegas.
The crown of E3 had already fallen before the pandemic, with major names like Sony and EA missing the convention and organising their own conferences instead. It leaves a doubt as to whether we will ever see the electronic entertainment show returned to its former glory.
