Higher than the bulk of PCs

Can you recall when smartphones used to have less memory than PCs? It’s been evolving over the years, with a lot of handsets moving to 4GB, 10GB, and 12GB. The Asus ROG Phone 3 was one of the first to feature 16GB; its replacement, the new ROG Phone 5, looks like it’s coming with even more: a whopping 18GB.

ROG Phone 5 will be released one week from today—you can watch the countdown on the Asus website. Being a gaming phone that is part of the ROG line, the handset has a lot of capacity, including a Qualcomm 888 SoC and a dual-cell 6,000 mAh battery. It was supposed to feature up to 16GB of RAM, much like its predecessor and several Samsung flagships, but it looks likely to become the first handset to boast 18GB of RAM.

A Geekbench entry spotted by MySmartPrice shows ROG Phone 5’s 1,113 single-core performance and 3,468 multi-core scores. It also reveals that the phone is coming out of the box with Android 11 and 18GB of RAM.

Based on previous Geekbench entries, it is possible that the handset will be available in various configurations, including 8GB, 16GB, and potentially 12GB, along with 512GB or 1TB of internal storage. Asus ROG Phone 5 is also likely to use UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR5 storage.

Other highlights include a triple rear camera system featuring a 64MP main snapper, a 6.78-inch panel, a strip-like back screen, 65W rapid charging, ultrasonic shoulder triggers, and dual USB Type-C ports.

The Asus ROG Phone 5 launch event will begin at 6 AM EST on March 10.
