Brooke Shields is ‘now bionic’

To christen a new theater, Cinema Society’s Andrew Saffir had Brooke Shields host a 40th-anniversary screening of “Pretty Baby.”

Before showing her old movie, Brooke rolled up her pant leg to show me her new knee. I smoothed it and she explained, “Titanium. I’m now bionic. I tore it, and had to have it replaced. I’m very into rehab and working out a lot — three or four times a week. Today, I even dance on the thing.

“I’m now grateful. It was a long, slow, painful rehabilitation process. But I watch myself carefully. If I let myself, I could drink you under the table with tequila. And I love wine.

“Now, it’s limiting myself — no hard alcohol, and making sure to balance my intake. And not going through metal detectors.”

Says the long-time actress and one-time child model: “This movie came out in 1978. I made it when I was 12. I finally saw it in college and wrote my thesis on it.”

Now, at 53: “I love going to movies with my two children. I love the emotional community connection of sharing with other people. TV is isolating. Spatial recognition is diminished.

“But raising kids nowadays can be exhausting and . . . it’s hard to negotiate today’s social media.”

Besides show business, Brooke also has a successful QVC clothing line of separates and accessories, and says: “I think I just have an Old World ethic.”
It’s an Amazon jungle out there

With whatever temporary plane he uses until he starts clogging NYC’s air, the question is: Will Amazon’s Jeff Bezos schlep to the next Academy Awards? Last I saw him, he was sitting with Harvey Weinstein at Weinstein’s table at Weinstein’s traditional VIP night-before-the-Oscars party at Beverly Hills’ Montage hotel. Question 2: With HW maybe skipping away from his problems, and Bezos guaranteeing employment for New Yorkers, maybe he’ll carve out a job for Harve?
New film fave

Already clawing for statuettes, Hollywood’s new favourite is “The Favourite.” In Fox Searchlight’s historical 18th-century drama, with Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman, Brit Queen Anne fights off the French — but not the femmes. Her jumpy Majesty wants You, too. Costumes so gorgeous that gorgeous actresses crawl under each other’s petticoats. If “The Favourite” isn’t your favourite, so? It IS educational.
A tasty treat

It’s turkey time. Here’s pro Ellen Easton’s chestnut stuffing recipe: Finely chop 6 celery stalks, 6 medium white mushrooms, ¹/₂-cup golden raisins, a medium onion, 5-ounces roasted chestnuts, 3 tbs. butter, 8 toasted bread slices, olive oil and ground sage.

In a frying pan, add butter as needed and ingredients. Brush bread with olive oil, sprinkle sage. Lay flat on cookie sheet. Toast in oven. Break into breadcrumbs. Season. Add ingredients. Invite me.
Wise words

In the ’80’s, “Mayflower Madam” Sydney Biddle Barrows ran an escort service. Now a management consultant, what she once managed was jumping johns. So with today’s new heightened sexual sensibility about birds doing it, bees doing it and boys doing it, has she any thoughts?

Sydney: “Let’s just say we took advantage of the male desire for us.” Such immortal words may yet go down with Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty, or give me death.”

Taking a financial page from Hillary’s book-writing/cash-collecting wisdom, Mrs. Obama’s new book says hubby’s brilliance and wisdom saved our country. This volume may be located in a bookstore’s science-fiction section.
