Navy awards Pratt & Whitney $2B for F-35 propulsion systems

The U.S. Navy has awarded a $2 billion contract modification to United Technologies' Pratt & Whitney Military Engines for work on F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

The contract modification will pay for non-recurring and tooling production, administrative labor, partner unique items and Lot 11 production propulsion systems, the Defense Department said Thursday.

Pratt and Whitney will produce 10 F135-PW-100 systems for the Navy, 51 F135-PW-100 systems for the Air Force, 24 F135-PW-600 systems for the Marine Corps and 49 F135-PW-100 and one F135-PW-600 systems for entities outside the Defense Department, including foreign military customers.

The company will conduct work on the contract in East Hartford, Conn., Indianapolis, Ind., and Bristol, Great Britain.

The Defense Department expects work will be finished in May 2021.

The Pentagon obligated the full value of the contract to Pratt and Whitney using fiscal 2017 and 2017 aircraft procurement funds from the Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy, as well as non-U.S. Defense Department funds and foreign military sales money. Of that, $288 million will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
